Torque sensors for automotive applications Oct 13, 2022

Torque sensors are used in a wide range of applications. Torque force is determined by two points: measuring torque sensor force and measuring speed. Torque sensors are not common in our daily life, but their application is very important.

A reaction torque sensor in the car checks the torsion of the torsion bar and converts it into an electrical signal. This electrical signal is transmitted to the electric power steering system under the battery.

The sensor is composed of a phase splitter unit and a torsion bar. Sensor 1 is located on the steering spindle and sensor 2 is located on the pinion shaft. After the torsion bar is rotated, the two phase splitter units generate a relative Angle, and the converted voltage signal is transmitted to the electric power steering system, which determines the corresponding operating voltage of the EPS steering motor according to the relative resistance.

1.      Electric power steering system only starts the motor to generate electricity when steering is needed, which can reduce the fuel consumption of the engine.

2.      Electric power steering system can provide power in a variety of driving conditions, reducing the non-uniformity of the motor. The output torque of the motor improves the steering characteristics of the vehicle and improves the active safety of the vehicle by assisting the interference of the system through the action of the transmission device.

3.      Electric power steering system has no hydraulic circuit, so it is easier to adjust and detect. Different programs can be set to quickly match different models, so as to short the production and development cycle. The system has no oil leakage problem and can reduce environmental pollution.

The electric power steering system mainly uses torque sensors to detect the magnitude and direction of the torque or the Angle generated by the steering wheel when the driver turns, and the required information is converted into digital signals and input to the control unit. These signals are calculated to obtain torque compatible with the driving conditions, and the command is used to drive the motor to work.

The damage of automobile torque sensor will directly lead to the loss of steering assist function and the failure of steering during driving. This kind of torque sensor is very important in the problem of automobile safety. The quality of torque sensor directly determines the safety factor of automobile.
